Lions re-sign QB Tim Boyle to a one-year deal

Detroit’s own “TB12” is back!

No, not that TB12. Tom Brady did come out of retirement, but he’s staying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This TB12 is Tim Boyle, who will be back in Detroit for a second season as a backup quarterback behind Jared Goff. Boyle agreed to terms on a one-year deal, per a report from Mike Garafolo.

The deal keeps Boyle, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent, in Detroit through 2022. Boyle started three games in 2021, completing 64.9 percent of his passes and throwing three TDs against six INTs. the new deal pays Boyle $2 million, with $1.75 million of that total fully guaranteed.

With Goff and Boyle ensconced at QB, it should close the door on any other free agency QB pursuits. Because it’s a one-year deal for a bargain-basement rate for veteran backups, bringing Boyle back should not impact the Lions’ draft plans at the position, whatever those plans might be.
