Lions rank in NFL’s middle in available salary cap room for 2022

A flurry of draft pick signings and undrafted free agents joining the Detroit Lions has had an impact on the team’s salary cap figure. After signing first-round picks Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams as well as five other draftees, the Lions now rank in the middle of the NFL pack in terms of available cap room.

Hutchinson signed for a fully guaranteed four-year contract worth $35.72 million. Even though his base salary for 2022 is under the league minimum at just $705,000, his guaranteed bonuses push his cap figure over $6.9 million.

The hits on the cap leave the Lions with a little over $10 million in cap room. The exact figure as of Friday, May 20th is $10,384,179, as calculated by Over The Cap. That ranks 18th among the NFL’s 32 teams, sandwiched between the Vikings and Texans.

The figure and rankings are similar at Spotrac, where the Lions are listed with $9,946,072 in available cap room.

Don’t expect the Lions to pursue any free agents with the available funds, however. GM Brad Holmes has repeatedly spoken about preferring to have a cap cushion to work with during the regular season.
