Lions QB Jared Goff approaching one of Aaron Rodgers’ NFL records

The Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 4. It’s possible Lions quarterback Jared Goff will have already broken one of Aaron Rodgers’ NFL records by the time Detroit arrives at Lambeau Field on Sept. 28.

Entering Week 2, Goff is 43 passes away from tying and 44 passes away from breaking Rodgers’ NFL record for most consecutive passes without an interception.

Rodgers’ record, set in 2018, stands at 402 straight passes. Dating back to last season, Goff has thrown 359 straight passes without an interception.

The Packers had a shot to stop Goff’s streak in Week 18 last year but were unable to intercept the Lions quarterback over 34 passing attempts during Detroit’s win at Lambeau Field.

This record attempt has another Packers tie-in: The last player to intercept Goff was actually cornerback Jaire Alexander during the Lions’ 15-9 win over the Packers on Nov. 6 of last year. Goff has been interception-less since, a run of 10 straight games including Week 1 of this season.

In 2018, Rodgers didn’t throw a single interception between Week 5 and Week 14. Luck is certainly involved; Rodgers’ interception streak ended on a ball that deflected off the hands of Jimmy Graham.

In 2022, Tom Brady made a run at Rodgers’ record but came up just short. He threw 399 consecutive passes without an interception.

Goff and the Lions play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in Week 2 and Atlanta Falcons in Week 3. If he attempts 44 passes without an interception over the next two weeks, he’ll come to Lambeau Field in possession of one Rodgers’ best interception records. If he attempts fewer than 44 passes without a pick before Week 4, the Packers would become the last line of defense of Rodgers’ record. Maybe Alexander can finish what he started back in November?

Note: Packers quarterback Jordan Love has thrown 48 straight passes without an interception entering Week 2.
