Lionel Messi started his second season in MLS with a bang on Wednesday night as Inter Miami cruised to a 2–0 win over Real Salt Lake.
Messi assisted on the first Miami goal of the night, playing Robert Taylor in perfectly behind the back line with a quick and accurate pass. He also played a key role in the second goal, with a long run leading to a pass to Luis Suárez, who found Taylor for the finish.
Once again, Messi was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. It often feels like he’s toying with his opponents, and never more so than on this one play in Wednesday night’s game, when Messi flicked the ball over the body of an injured opponent who was laying on the ground.

The play didn’t result in a goal, but it was as memorable as anything Messi did that night. It was a humorously creative play by Messi, but also really impressive. Not only did he have the presence of mind to attempt the flick over the defender’s prone body, he flicked it over the opponent’s chest perfectly into a position where he was able to get a shot off. He’s always finding new ways to amaze us.
