Lionel Messi's representatives held a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain about his future on Wednesday, according to reports.
Messi is out of contract in the summer with the two-year deal he signed with PSG upon leaving Barcelona in 2021 expiring at the end of the season. The American side Inter Miami, part-owned by David Beckham, have been linked with a move for Messi, who will have the pick of the clubs he wants to sign for if his contract does run out at the end of the season.
Messi could sign fresh terms now and that would ensure PSG could keep hold of the player or sell him for a transfer fee instead of the Argentina 2022 World Cup winner leaving as a free agent. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the first meeting over Messi's future at PSG was held with the club on Wednesday with his father, Jorge, leading the talks.
"Length of contract, salary, more details are still to be agreed - more meetings will take place in the next weeks," Romano wrote on social media platform Twitter.
Messi has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the past and his great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, was a target for the Stamford Bridge side in the summer with his agent Jorge Mendes holding talks with the club before the Portuguese's exit from Manchester United.
There is no suggestion, nor likelihood, that Messi will be a target for Chelsea come the summer but if the club's owner Todd Boehly wanted to continue making a splash in the transfer market then a move for the Barcelona legend would do just the trick.
At 35 years of age, Messi proved during the World Cup that he can still make a difference on the biggest stage and would be a big get for Chelsea commercially.
