Few players have arrived to MLS with as much fanfare as Lionel Messi. And in his debut Friday with Inter Miami, the Argentine superstar did not disappoint.
Messi began Miami’s group-stage Leagues Cup matchup vs. Cruz Azul on the bench before entering in the 54th minute. The 36-year-old’s highly-anticipated debut appeared to be spoiled when his side’s Liga MX opponents equalized just 10 minutes later.
But no one is ever safe with Lionel Messi in the opposition. An eventful 90 minutes of action culminated in the seven-time Ballon D’or winner earning a free kick in a prime position to put a shot on goal. Stepping up to the ball deep into stoppage time, Messi produced a moment of magic to cap his Inter Miami debut in stunning fashion.

The late curling effort earned Inter Miami the full three points to kick off its Leagues Cup campaign. Messi & Co. will next face Atlanta United on July 25.
For now, though, the World Cup winner provided fans with the perfect glimpse into the stardom he promises to bring to MLS.
