Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football just six weeks after Argentina's 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain and three weeks after the death of his father, drawing a close to a 20-year career with the Albiceleste.

The 39-year-old confirmed the decision in a handwritten note posted to Instagram on Monday, telling supporters that 'the time has come' and that he has 'nothing left to give' the national side.
