Linlithgow Union Canal Society’s Fun Day is returning this weekend.
The event at the canal basin starts at 1pm this Sunday - and normally attracts huge crowds from across West Lothian and further afield.
Louise Thomson, gala day lady-in-waiting, and Linlithgow councillor, Pauline Orr, will open the event in the afternoon.
Music and entertainment will be provided by the Livingston Ukelele Band and The Jennifer Ewan Band, BBQ, and a fundraising bric-a-brac stall will all be taking place in the basin alongside the tea room and Museum.
The event last took place in 2019, and there are lots of plans to make the return of the fun day one to remember - as the Union Canal celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.
Roads in the vicinity of the basin will be closed for safety reasons for part of Sunday, allowing the crowds to visit the stalls on the green opposite the basin.
The Linlithgow Union Canal Society will be running boat trips in and out of the basin until the cardboard boat race commences at 3pm.
A free ferry service will also be running all day to take passengers back and forth across the basin.
Chris Matheson Dear, chair at LUCS commented: “It is indeed great that we are again able to run this ever popular event - it really is an important day in the Linlithgow calendar, and one that the local community always look forward to.
“Our volunteers have been working extremely hard to resurrect the event after some three years.
“So much preparation is required leading up to the event, not only by LUCS volunteers and membership, but the many other charities and community organisations who participate in the event, not forgetting the Cardboard Boat Race entrants who have been designing and building their craft over recent weeks”
“The Cardboard Boat Race historically attracts interest from far and wide, with teams using all their ingenuity to design their boats, in the hope of staying afloat long enough to complete the timed course and challenge out in the depths of the basin, under the watchful eye of international water rescue keeping everyone safe.”
Included in the stall line-up this year are Punch & Judy shows, Oxfam, Chest Heart & Stroke, Cat Rescue, Linlithgow Kayak Club, Community Moorings, Lions Club, Linlithgow Link and many others.
In addition to the charity stalls, both Scottish Fire Brigade Heritage and the local Fire Brigade will be in attendance.
Chris Matheson Dear continued:“I really would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring back this annual event, but would like to make special mention of the local Air Cadets who will be assisting with the set up and break down of all the stalls, and be helping with marshalling throughout the day.”
“Now all we need is the current spell of good weather to continue, so that we can welcome the crowds back.”
