Linfield legend among first to congratulate Larne captain on title win

Tomas Cosgrove says Linfield legend Pat McShane was among one of the first people to congratulate him following Larne's historic title win.

The 30-year-old got his hands on the Gibson Cup on Friday night as Larne's title coronation was recognised at Inver Park.

It is Larne's first-ever Premiership title, with Cosgrove writing his name into the history books by being the club's first captain to raise the famous trophy.

Cosgrove says he has been inundated with messages of congratulations from the Irish League fraternity, and some "old boys" that he used to play alongside.

He told Belfast Live's That's What I Call Football podcast: "I have had hundreds of messages since we won the title. People like Pat McShane from Linfield, a great Irish League player in his day.

"He was messaging me. Also people like Stuarty King, all the old boys like Janty (Barry Johnston), Marty (Donnelly). Everyone sent their congratulations.

"They know how big an achievement it is for Larne to do it. For all them to send me messages like that was great to see."

Cosgrove says being the first Larne captain to lift the Gibson Cup was a dream moment.

He admits the initial feeling after clinching the title was a mixture of joy and relief.

"Just because I have been there from the start makes it more special. When I arrived people just said we were mercenaries and hoped we wouldn't win anything," he added.

"But to get over the line and do it, nobody can take that away from us. And the town can celebrate with the club."
