Linfield crowned champions for 56th time after final day victory

Linfield held their nerve on the final day of the season to be crowned champions for a 56th time.

David Healy's men secured the Gibson Cup with a 2-0 win over Coleraine at Windsor Park.

The Blues finished one point ahead of Cliftonville who ensured a thrilling finish with a 2-1 victory over Glentoran at the Oval.

It was the final chapter in a thrilling title race that went to the wire.

Cliftonville drew first blood on Saturday when they took the lead against Glentoran courtesy of Chris Gallagher's bouncing strike from 25 yards after just 16 minutes.

It came after Linfield were denied an early penalty when Eetu Vertainen fell under a challenge from Stephen O'Donnell.

Television replays suggested there was a touch from the Coleraine defender, but referee Ian McNabb waved play on.

The frustration inside Windsor was palpable, but the home fans' nerves were calmed when Ben Hall headed home his first goal for the club one minute before the break.

Hall rose to meet Niall Quinn's corner with a bullet header that gave Coleraine keeper Martin Gallagher no chance.

And the Blues fans were in dreamland in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Chris McKee doubled their advantage with a cool finish.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 striker was played through on goal and confidently slid his shot past the advancing Gallagher.

Cliftonville doubled their lead at the Oval in the 67th minute when Ryan Curran scored, but the Glens got a reply nine minutes from time when Seanan Clucas headed home Bobby Burns' corner.

It was fitting that both title rivals won their final games, but it was Linfield who clinched the Gibson Cup for the fourth season in a row.

What a race it has been.
