After a dramatic end to season six, Line of Duty fans have been left with bated breath, wondering whether there will be another season on the horizon.
The show gripped the nation, with cliffhanger twists, shocking endings, and a mind-bending central mystery that kept the nation wondering: who is Fourth Man?
Spoiler alert:
The sixth-season finale finally gave us the identity of ‘H’, The Fourth Man at the top of the OCG, wrapping up a story that had been running for a decade.
The season six finale saw anti-corruption trio Hastings, Arnott, and Fleming finally expose the identity of H, with DC Chloë Bishop discovering it was Ian Buckells all along, wrapping up a story that had been running for a decade.
However, it might not be a complete wrap for the drama just yet if Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar’s recent comments are anything to go by.
Here’s everything we know about a possible Line of Duty season.
Will there be a Line of Duty season 7?
We know the BBC is certainly open to another season – which is unsurprising considering the record ratings season six managed to achieve.
BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore said, “Addictive event television, Line of Duty has kept the nation guessing for the last seven weeks, so it’s no surprise that last night’s jaw-dropping finale set a ratings record.
“Jed Mercurio is a master of his craft, and I would like to congratulate him and the entire cast and crew for delivering such an incredible drama series. I’m looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be.”
Asked for an update on season seven, BBC Drama commissioner Piers Wenger simply said: “No comment” – a very familiar line for fans of the show.
Dunbar recently teased that the H plot might not be entirely wrapped up, with the Radio Times reporting that he told Tom Allen on the BAFTA TV red carpet: “There may be a way to go with all that.
“We don’t know yet, do we? There are rumours. Who knows?”
What are the Line of Duty season 7 release date rumours?
Season seven of Line of Duty is yet to be confirmed but, if it is commissioned, we’re probably in for a wait, with the drama usually airing across March and April.
Previous seasons of Line of Duty have aired in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021.
There’s a slight possibility Mercurio will write up the new season in time for a 2022 air date, but it’s more likely to return in spring 2023.
Who will be in the cast of Line of Duty season 7?
There are a number of rumours around the proposed cast for Line of Duty season seven.
Spoiler alert:
As none of the AC-12 trio died during season six, it’s thought that Martin Compston (Det Insp Steve Arnott), Adrian Dunbar (Supt Ted Hastings), and Vicky McClure (Det Insp Kate Fleming) will all be returning.
It’s also thought that Dc Chloe Bishop (Shalom Brune-Franklin) will return.
Elsewhere, Anna Maxwell Martin is expected to return as Det Chief Supt Patricia Carmichael.
