Limerick hurler arrested after alleged headbutt on Tipperary rival in pub brawl

A Limerick player was arrested after allegedly headbutting a member of the Tipperary panel after a row broke out between them in a pub.

The Irish Independent report that the quarrel between the two players occurred in a popular Limerick city pub around 12.30 am on Monday - just hours after the two sides had faced off in a Munster Championship game.

Gardai were called to the premises following a report of an assault having taken place there. The Treaty panel member was then arrested for an alleged assault under the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and taken to Henry Street Garda Station.

He was later released without charge after questioning.

A file is now set to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions who will then deliberate on whether a case should be taken against him.

There's no word yet on the extent of the injuries the Tipperary player may have sustained during the fracas.

The Irish Independent believe that there was no formal statement of complaint made to Gardai from anyone related to Tipp GAA.

Last night, the Treaty County released a statement on the matter.

It read: “On Sunday night last a member of the Limerick Senior Hurling squad was involved in a breach of our team protocols.

“The matter has been dealt with by management internally and no further comment will be made on the matter at this time.”

Limerick triumphed in Sunday's fixture between the rivals by 3-21 to 0-23.

Colm Bonnar's side had actually led for long stages before being pegged back and overtaken in the final ten minutes thanks largely to two late Treaty goals.

They are now all but out of the Championship having suffered their third defeat in as many games.

The All-Ireland champions meanwhile have won all of their fixtures so far and are already guaranteed a place in the last eight.

Their spot in the Munster final will be confirmed should they get at least a draw in Ennis against Clare on Sunday.
