Lime Street road closure as more work takes place on delayed revamp of key gateway

Part of Liverpool's famous Lime Street will be closed to traffic for most of next week.

Liverpool Council has announced that a one-way closure will come into force on the famous city centre road from Sunday as part of the heavily-delayed revamp of the whole area.

The closure will impact the southbound lane of Lime Street and will run from 5pm on Sunday, March 13 until Thursday, March 17.

For the duration of the closure, all traffic (buses and taxis) that would normally travel down London Rd to Lime Street will be diverted via Norton Street, Hunter Street, Byrom Street, Old Haymarket and St John’s Lane, where they can gain access to Queen Square.

The closure is to allow a new kerb line to be installed in front of a new hotel development being developed next to Lime Street Train Station.

The work will cause more disruption from a wider redevelopment scheme that has been dogged with delays and problems.

The council apologised for the inconvenience the work will cause.

The biggest issue came when the council's main contractor on the project, NMCN, collapsed into administration last year.

Since then a new contractor, Huyton Asphalt, has been appointed to finish a scheme that has been amended after concerns were raised by councillors.

Under the changed design, buses will now be able to travel in both directions on Lime Street and there will be enhanced pedestrian crossings, improved cycle facilities, disabled parking facilities and a new bus stop outside the train station.

The Lime Street scheme had originally included a new water feature at the southern end of St George’s Hall, but this part of the plan has now been removed, to allow for the reconnection of the historic Steble Fountain at the northern end of the Grade I listed venue.

It is expected all works on the Lime Street scheme will be complete by summer.
