On Saturday, two individuals were hospitalized after lightning struck a tree near a residence adjacent to the TPC River Highlands golf course in Cromwell, Connecticut. The golf course is currently hosting the prestigious PGA Tour's Travelers Championship, following the U.S. Open.
Reports of the lightning strike began flooding in around 4:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from Cromwell Police. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a tree that had been directly hit by lightning, with three individuals in close proximity.
Cromwell Fire Department Chief Jason Brade confirmed that two of the individuals received medical attention on-site and were subsequently transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The condition of the injured parties was not disclosed, while the third individual declined medical treatment.
The incident caused a delay in the third round of the Travelers Championship, where golfer Cameron Young had earlier made history by shooting a remarkable 59 – the PGA Tour's first sub-60 round in four years.
Notably, lightning poses a significant risk on golf courses, as evidenced by a similar incident in 2019 when six individuals sustained injuries due to a lightning strike on a 60-foot pine tree during the Tour Championship.
