A lifeguard has told of the pride she feels when saving lives as the RNLI looks to recruit its summer team in Tyne and Wear.
Jess Ward is an experienced lifeguard at RNLI Tynemouth, now getting ready to begin another busy season. And although nothing can beat the feeling of rescuing those in need, she said there are many other aspects that make her job worthwhile.
“I can’t think of a more rewarding role than being an RNLI lifeguard,” she said. “I love the teamwork and interacting with the public. I also enjoy sharing preventative messages, to stop people getting into difficulty in the water.

“This year it will be my third season with the charity. I’m thoroughly looking forward to getting back on the beach with my fellow lifeguards to help save lives at sea.”
And if that’s not enough, Jess went on to explain that there are many career prospects which can follow on from being an RNLI lifeguard.
“The training that we receive is second to none. I’ll be starting an apprenticeship as an Ambulance Technician with the North East Ambulance Service later this year,” she said.
“The invaluable and transferable skills that I’ve learnt with the RNLI will certainly hold me in good stead. I’d encourage anyone looking to develop their skill set and enhance their CV to think about becoming a lifeguard.”
Lifeguard experience manager Lee Fisher echoed Jess’ comments, adding: “Beach lifeguarding is a great opportunity and a very rewarding role that changes lives – including your own – all whilst enjoying the beach as your office.
“Our lifeguards range from teenagers all the way up to lifesavers in their seventies, as long as you meet the fitness requirements and you are over 16 years old, there could be a role for you.
“The job also has great paths for progression - we have lifeguards who have been working for the RNLI for years, both on the beach and as part of our support teams, and the skills you gain can make an ideal first step towards many careers. It’s a great opportunity whether you want a rewarding summer job or to pursue a career in lifesaving.”
