Life stories are important. They connect us. Reading about the experiences of others helps us make sense of our own lives and the world around us.
So it's no surprise that many of us have the desire to shape our own experiences, thoughts, and feelings into words. But taking that first step can be daunting. Opening up on the page exposes us. It makes us feel vulnerable. We may ask ourselves, 'who am I to write this?' or 'what do I have to say?' If left unspoken, however, our narratives risk remaining forever unheard.
This insightful masterclass led by Rhik Samadder will help you find a way into your story and discover your writer’s voice. It will also feature a special Q&A session with the Evening Standard's editor-in-chief and memoirist Dylan Jones, providing invaluable insights into the memoir writing process.
What will you learn?
This confidence-building workshop is designed to help you start writing without fear of judgement. You’ll learn about the mechanics of life writing and dive straight in with some practical exercises to help you discover your writing voice and develop your story.
In the latter part of the workshop, Rhik will be joined by Dylan for an intimate discussion about the ethical considerations and creative challenges of memoir writing. You’ll get the chance to put your questions to both and hopefully discover that while life writing undoubtedly requires courage, it can be highly rewarding.
Who is it taught by?
Rhik Samadder is a celebrated journalist, actor and author. His Sunday Times bestselling memoir I Never Said I Loved You, was an Evening Standard book of the year, described as ‘breathtaking in its honesty and hilarity’.
Dylan Jones is editor-in-chief of the Evening Standard and a New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author. Dylan’s highly entertaining yet bravely vulnerable memoir These Foolish Things will be published on 13th June, and is available to pre-order now.
Why should you attend?
This masterclass is a rare opportunity to learn from the personal perspectives of two great writers. You’ll learn about the particular intricacies and challenges that come with writing from one’s own life and plant the seeds to get started on your own.
