Hidden away in a town in North Wales is a street which is steeped in controversy - quite literally. Harlech is probably best known for its impressive mediaeval castle, but it’s also home to what was once the world’s steepest street.
In 2019 Ffordd Pen Llech was officially named the world’s steepest street and awarded the Guinness World Record. However, the decision caused an uproar on the other side of the world as the title was taken from Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand, which had held the record until.
The decision was challenged almost immediately after it was taken. Representatives of the antipodean street were sent to Harlech to take measurements of the street and by April 2020 Ffordd Pen Llech had lost its title to Baldwin Street, North Wales Live reports.
