NEW YORK — New York City will be getting a taste of London’s best. The stage adaptation of the 2001 novel by Yann Martel, which later became an Academy Award-winning film, will begin previews on Broadway March 9 with the play’s acclaimed London cast.
This comes after a West End stint that garnered 5 Olivier Awards, including best new play and best actor — the latter of which was awarded to Hiran Abeysekera for his performance in the titular role.
Abeysekera will travel with the production to New York, along with castmates Fred Davis and Scarlet Wilderink, who shared the Olivier for best supporting actor as the puppeteers manipulating “Richard Parker,” the tiger in the production.
The play, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Max Webster, will have an official opening night at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 30.
Also on display will be the Olivier-winning lighting design from Tim Lutkin and Andrzej Goulding, as well as Olivier-winning set design from Tim Hatley, Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell. Carolyn Downing was nominated for her sound design and Andrew T. Mackay for his original music.
The Broadway cast includes Brian Thomas Abraham as Cook/Voice of “Richard Parker,” Rajesh Bose as Father, Avery Glymph, Mahira Kakkar, Kirstin Louie, Salma Qarnain, Sathya Sridharan, Daisuke Tsuji, and Sonya Venugopal.
“Life of Pi” on Broadway is produced by Simon Friend, Daryl Roth, Hal Luftig and Mark Gordon Pictures.
