Life of blind mystic Baba Vanga from losing eyesight in tornado to husband tragedy

From grisly visions to consulting in the halls of power, blind mystic Baba Vanga had an incredible life built from a tough upbringing.

Bulgarian Baba was responsible for some of the most infamous predictions about the future and gained a big following during her life, reportedly even consulting with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

Born in 1911 in what is now Macedonia, Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova later became known as Baba Vanga, the soothsayer with the answers about the future.

It is claimed the 'Nostradamus of the Balkans' had a rare gift that allowed her to see into the future and it is said she made predictions all the way into the year 5079.

Information on Baba's early life is hard to come by and much of it appears to now be the result of claims by Baba herself or from her followers.

It is believed she was injured after a tornado hit her village when she was just 12, throwing her into the air and flinging dust into her eyes. Following the alleged event, she slowly went blind and began experiencing visions.

Before she lost her eyesight, she suffered the tragedy of losing her mother at an early age and her father went off to fight in the Bulgarian army in World War 1.

Her supporters claimed she predicted the awful events of 9/11, referencing 'steel birds' attacking Americans. The birds are supposed to be the hijacked aircraft that were flown into the Twin Towers, murdering thousands of people.

She said: "The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing."

It is one of her more well-known predictions, but plenty have been wide of the mark, including Europe ceasing to exist by 2017. Despite this, some believe this references the Brexit vote the year before.

Not everyone was convinced by her supposedly mystic powers and the New York Times were told by a sceptical resident in 1995 that "local people don't believe her".

They said: "She just looks at you, asks you what’s wrong and then repeats phrases she has memorized. A lot of what she does is for money.”

For 2022, Baba - she died of breast cancer in 1996 - supposedly predicted large cities to be struck by droughts.

Italy has struggled recently with its worst drought since the 1950s and people from the country and fellow European state Portugal were being told to limit their water usage.

Despite this, the expected aliens arriving by asteroids have so far not yet surfaced, nor is there widespread famine in India.
