Life in the tiny Nottinghamshire village where you 'need to have a car' to live

Neighbours have opened up on life in their 'beautiful' village which was home to the last surviving Dambuster, Johnny Johnson. Despite Langford only having a handful of houses, villagers say they wouldn't have it any other way, and say the only thing that spoils the area is the main road.

Retired, Pete Lacey, 54, has lived in the village for over six years. When asked his favourite thing about living in Langford, near Newark, he replied: "The rural setting, as we moved from Nottingham.

He continued: "It's quiet and we get on with the neighbours, it's friendly here. You can walk into Winthorpe and there's a little pub there, but it's quite a long walk into Collingham from here so a car is essential. We tend to go into Newark though really.

"There are lots of dog walking places around here, as it's close to the river, close to the woods and the local RSPB site." Speaking about the "busy" main road that cuts through the village, Pete said: "They speed through, especially the motorbikes but it's a main road here and you get that on a lot of roads I suppose."

Phlebotomist Nicole Aldridge, 52, decided to move to Langford two years ago after she "fell in love with the house." Speaking of village life, she explained: "I just love being in the middle of nowhere with nothing around.

"The place itself is beautiful and the neighbours are all lovely, and it's great at Christmas as it's all lit up. You need to have a car to live here but we quite often take a walk to Winthorpe where the pub is."

She continued: "If they took the road away it would be absolutely perfect." Nicola explained that there are drivers speeding "all the time" as "people just floor it."

When asked if she thought speed cameras or reducing the speed limit would help, she replied: "It would help I suppose for some but not for everyone, as it's a long straight road they put their foot down."

Retired, Ian Higgins, 69, has lived in Langford for more than 30 years. He said: "From where we were living in the wild of Lincolnshire this is like civilisation. This building was derelict when we bought it, but we have converted it to a house and it's also conveniently located to the A1 and A46 for travel."

When asked if it was a struggle not having amenities in the village, Ian stated: "It's good in that way, it's quiet and don't want to live in a built-up area."

"The biggest problem with Langford is the traffic. In summer the motorcycles are just like a blur.

"To walk or cycle on this road is dangerous, there's not a constant footpath that goes all the way from here to Collingham. So for us with the dog, we drive to walk around Collingham or Winthorpe.

"We don't have a pub or anything here so Collingham is it for us." Sonia Parsons, 66, works at Collingham Football Club and has lived in Langford for almost 47 years.

She said: "We're going to have to move at some point but I would be sorry to leave this place. It's a lovely village to live in, lovely neighbours and we all help each other and at Christmas it's amazing."

Speaking about the main road, Sonia added: "We have a bus that stops here but I don't really use it. Motorbikes are the worse, some are quite good and wave to you but some just tear through the village."
