Life in the shadow of Nottingham branch of 'UK's worst hotel chain'

It dominates the skyline of Maid Marian Way and over the years has welcomed thousands of guests to Nottingham. But The Brittania Hotel, part of the hotel chain ranked the worst in the country, has been dogged by poor reviews.

It is the ninth year in a row that the chain has been at the bottom of the pile and in Nottingham the venue is ranked 41 out of 44 hotels in the city on Tripadvisor. But while it hit the headlines nationally, people living and working around the site say they have not suffered any adverse effects.

Manager of The Roundhouse pub, Lisa Bedford, said: "I am not aware of that [the ranking] and I am the manager here and I have not heard anything about it. It is not a good thing to have on our doorstep. We have more tourists from St James' Hotel and there are no issues there. I have no knowledge of it affecting us at all, but it would not be the best to have the worst hotel on your door step."

Rae Weston, manager of Ye Olde Salutation Inn, added: "They have been there years. To be honest, if people ask us where to stay, it has never been anywhere you suggest to stay. I have not heard anyone say they are staying there. We normally get asked a lot for directions and I have never been asked for directions to there. It is going to be good for the other hotels though."

Ellie Harrison, 28, said: "We are not locals but without having been in there, I do not know myself how bad it is." Elsa Smith, 25, said: "I would not book one of those hotels now I know that it is the worst chain."

And resident Harvey Johnston, 46, said: "It does not look very nice. I would not stay there myself."

The chain which runs the hotel off Maid Marian Way, which had previously been used by human traffickers as a brothel, just last week slashed 1,000 jobs. Not only that, Britannia Hotels was ranked by Which? as the chain where guests were most likely to say they had a problem.

More than half of guests surveyed said they ran into a problem during their stay at the hotel chain, with cleanliness being the most common issue. Britannia was rated one star out of five for bathrooms, and two stars for seven other categories such as cleanliness, customer service and value for money.

The Nottingham hotel has a 'poor' rating on TripAdvisor. One customer wrote: "There are two good things about this hotel - it's a good location and it's clean. Everything else was a joke. It's okay if you're with the lads on a stag do or whatever but don't bring your Mrs here. It's depressing."

Britannia Hotels was approached for comment but did not respond to requests from Nottinghamshire Live
