Life in Nottinghamshire's 'poshest village' which neighbours say is just lovely

Residents living in Nottinghamshire's "prim and proper" most expensive village have lifted the lid on what it's like to live there.

Colston Bassett was named in the Telegraph's '54 poshest villages' in Britain list and has been deemed the most expensive in the county - with the average house price coming in at a whopping £786,955.

The most expensive property can be found in Hall Lane, selling for £3,250,000 in June last year.

People living in Colston Bassett told Nottinghamshire Live they loved the local pub, the Martin's Arms, as well as the surrounding countryside and the picturesque church.

Indeed, St Mary's Church in the village is designated as an 'Ancient Monument', dating back to 1135, and is Grade-I listed.

Marie Green, who has lived in the village for four years, said: "It's very quiet.

"I think it's just nice to be in the countryside with my family.

"I work in Radcliffe, so I get quite a good balance, because that has the feel of a town - whereas it is a lot quieter here.

"There is a lot more going on there, but I like it here because it is so peaceful.

"We're quite well connected as well, we're not too out of the way, which is good."

Mike McLugh, from Nottingham, had stopped in the village during a bike ride with Tim Daniel from Wysall.

Mr McLugh said: "We come here quite a lot - I've been to the pub a few times and it's lovely.

"I suppose people move here because it is a lovely village. And there is also a prestige thing, I guess, with moving to a place like this.

"I'm not surprised house prices are so high."

Colston Bassett is home to just a few hundred residents and has in the past made the headlines due to significant flooding.

It is also known for being the home of traditional Shropshire and Stilton blue cheeses.

Another 66-year-old resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I think it costs more to be here because it's quite a small village and most of the houses are quite big, there are a lot of people with big gardens- and driveways and things like that.

"People here are quite prim and proper - everyone is lovely.

"I absolutely love it here. It's got a proper village feel. It's so good for going out and walking the dog that most people here have one!

"That is quite a lot of money, on average, but it's what it gets you. I think most people you speak to that live here will say it's lovely."

One man, who didn't want to be named, but has been coming to the village for more than 60 years, said: "It's great to come and see the church, or go to the pub, and I always bring the dog.

"I've been coming here for a long time. There's a new development being built and there are quite a lot of new houses which have probably brought the average price up."

In its 'top 54 poshest villages' story The Telegraph says: "Colston Bassett Stilton, arguably the king of British blue cheese, hails from this village in the Vale of Belvoir.

"It is foodie country with the award-winning pub the Martin’s Arms in the village, a short drive to Perkins Bar & Bistro and England cricketer Stuart Broad’s pub Tap & Run. There’s even a local spa called The Little Day Retreat."
