Life in 'cultured' Nottingham high street where people can 'find anything'

Takeaways, clothes shops, international supermarkets and homeware stores are just some of the retail options you will find on one "cultured" Nottingham high street. Shoppers and businesses have spoken about what it is like on Sneinton Dale.

With companies like Georgio's which have been in the area for decades, there are newer businesses such as YUM. Shoppers feel they can find anything in the area.

Mohammed Shah, 37, lives in Sneinton. He said: "Shopping in Sneinton is very good, you can find anything you need.

"I always use PAK Foods and I get a takeaway for the kids as a treat and they go to a barbers on Sneinton Dale too." Mohammed works as a delivery driver.

He has lived in Sneinton for eight years. He added: "There's clothes shops for women too.

"Many Muslim women dress modestly and they can find that clothing here." Sneinton Dale is not far from the city centre, Bakersfield, Colwick and the River Trent.

Ethan Ryder, 34, of Bakersfield, uses the shops on Sneinton Dale daily. He said: "I love it round here, I remember going into Georgio's as a kid after school - Sneinton Dale wouldn't be the same without that place.

"The newsagents have been here for years as well. I go in there at times and I use the Co-op and PAK Foods."

Ethan, who works in retail, added: "At PAK Foods you get all your seasonings and I get my soup mix from there too."

Jane Parker, 65, has lived in Sneinton for 10 years. Now retired, she said: "It's very cultured here which I like.

"You meet people and learn about their culture or religions, it's nice. I can find most things on my shopping list in Sneinton. If not, you can go into town - it's a very central area with good bus routes."

Jane added: "I like using the library. I always go in there to see what books are about and the staff there are great too. It's good for the kids in the area as well." The Dales Centre Library in Sneinton Dale has been used as a warm hub for the past few months.

Traders have also opened up about what it is like working in Sneinton Dale. Akmal's, which has been operating since 2018, is a clothes shop.

Rubina Akmal shared how business is currently going. She said: "Business is moderately OK. In regards to what we sell, we have modest wear which sells really well.

"We have winter wear too - there are a lot of Pakistani people in the area who come in for those. We have a lot in here - you can get something for a wedding which is more expensive but in general our prices range from around 50p to £45."

Akmal's also sells jewellery and other accessories. Meanwhile, one newsagents in Sneinton Dale said business was tough following the Covid pandemic.

Owner Abdul Ghani has worked in the News Shop with his wife for 38 years. He said: "After coronavirus, it's bad.

"We have the same customers come in sometimes - the old paperboy still comes in - but business is bad. Business was good when the pub was across the road. People from there would come in but now it's gone."
