Lidl issues lager product recall and offers full refund due to allergy risk

Popular discount supermarket Lidl has warned customers not to drink some of its beer due to it containing sulphur dioxide which has not been labelled. Lidl GB is recalling Starovice Czech Lager which has a strength of 5% and comes in 500ml bottles.

The only bottles affected are those with a best before date of 16.10.2022. This is due to the undeclared sulphur dioxide, which is an allergen.

A Lidl spokesperson said: "If you have bought the above product, and have an allergy or intolerance to sulphur dioxide, we advise you not to drink it. Instead, return it to a Lidl GB store for a full refund, with or without a receipt. Other best before dates or other Starovice products are not affected by this recall. Lidl GB wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The recall comes as Lidl is calling on the public to help locate sites for new stores in Nottinghamshire - and has revealed that it will pay a finder's fee which could equate to £22,500 for anyone who successfully identifies a location. The company has published its latest list of desired locations across the country, including a number in Nottinghamshire.

As it aims to reach 1,100 stores by the end of 2025, Lidl is looking to open in the centre of Nottingham, Basford, Edwalton, Gedling, Hucknall, Kimberley, Lady Bay, and Radcliffe-on-Trent. In the north of the county, it is on the lookout for potential sites in Mansfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

The discounter is investing £1.3 billion in its expansion across 2021 and 2022. The finder's fee, offered to any members of the public who successfully identify suitable sites for new stores, is either 1.5 per cent of the total freehold purchase price or 10 percent of the first year’s rent for leaseholds, which would equate to £22,500 for a completed £1.5m site purchase.
