Chennai: Liberalism, tolerance key part of education, says former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan

CHENNAI: Liberalism, tolerance and respect for opinions and beliefs of others are the important lessons of education, said economist and former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan on Saturday

Addressing the students passing out of Krea University in the city, Rajan said, “True liberalism is not to shout others down, but to listen to them, to understand their perspective, and if you are still convinced that you are right, try and persuade them through argument."

He said changing one's mind is not a sign of weakness. It is a mark of confidence that your self worth is not diminished if you accept you are wrong, he said. “In a world where the space for discussion and debate is shrinking, I hope you will work hard to expand that space again," said Rajan said. Another important lesson of education, he said, is to treat one another with decency and love rather than abuse and hatred.

Dr Naushad Forbes, founder president of CII and co-chairman of Forbes Marshall, who was the chief guest of the convocation ceremony addressed the students virtually from Pune.

He said, “Our task is to ensure we are the world's best performing economy in the next 30 years, not just one of the 10 best," he said.
