Liam Payne‘s cause of death has been revealed to be injuries he sustained from falling from a third-storey hotel balcony in Argentina.
The Argentinian prosecutor’s office has Payne sustained multiple traumas, including internal and external bleeding. From the autopsy, it is believed that his head injuries sustained from the fall alone were enough to result in the singer’s death.
According to a translated autopsy report, Payne is believed to have been in a state of “semi or total unconsciousness” when he fell.
“The prosecutor’s office indicated that, based on the position in which the body was found and the injuries from the fall, it is presumed that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and may have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness,” the report says, per Us Weekly.
“No injuries were observed that would suggest the involvement of third parties.”
Authorities are currently investigating the 31-year-old’s death in the hopes of discovering what happened during his final hours. According to witnesses at the Casa Sur hotel in Palermo, Argentina, where the fall took place, the former One Direction member was alone at the time.
One witness told The Guardian that he heard consistent noise throughout the hotel on the day of Payne’s death.
“I thought they were doing construction, there was so much banging, doors slamming, most of the day. It was loud, bizarre,” Doug Jones told the publication.
“Later I heard the sirens, thinking perhaps there was a fire somewhere. And then I heard a very loud scream.”
Emergency services were reportedly called to the hotel about an “aggressive man” who “could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol”.
Payne’s room at the Buenos Aires hotel reportedly contained a smashed TV, white powder and drug paraphernalia at the time of his death.
Tragically, the Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti told reporters that by the time paramedics arrived at the scene, it was too late.
“Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life,” he told The Sun.
“Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”
It is currently unknown if the fall was accidental or intentional.
Payne’s death has been a shock for the public and entertainment industry alike, prompting a series of heartfelt tributes for the late singer.
On Friday, Payne’s family and his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, shared heartfelt statements about his tragic passing.
Payne had visited Argentina two weeks prior of his death to reconnect with Horan, who was performing in the country’s capital.
