Liam Neeson's 'secret' Derry Girls cameo leaves viewers aghast as he stars in new series opener

Derry Girls fans got the shock of their lives on Tuesday night when Hollywood A-lister Liam Neeson made an appearance in the first episode of the new series.

After a few years away from screens and a delayed start to production on series three due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lisa McGee's smash hit comedy finally returned to Channel 4 this week, with viewers hailing the series opener as 'classic Derry Girls.' As they near the very end of their days at Our Lady Immaculate College, millions joined Erin, Orla, Michelle and Clare and Michelle's cousin James on the eve of the getting their GCSE results.

However, after being thoroughly wound up by Sister Michael, the teens decided they didn't want to wait until morning and, instead, decided to sneak into the school to try and find out their results early. Once arriving there late at night, they were confronted by two men, who they assumed were caretakers. However, they were anything but and the pupils inadvertently helped thieves burgle their school; cue them being surrounded by police as they walked back out the doors.

The group were then hauled into the local police station where they faced a full Taken-style interrogation from Liam, in the role of a RUC detective. Completely stealing the scene, Hollywood star Liam was the cherry on the cake of a brilliant episode and Derry Girls fans flocked to Twitter to share their shock and delight at him being on the show.

One tweeted: " liam freaking neeson in derry girls? Wtf," with a second reacting: "Laughed like a drain! And as for Liam Neeson... genius!!!!" Equally gobsmacked, another posted: "So nice to have #DerryGirls back! Was not expecting Liam f*ckin Neeson like!"

An early teaser for next week's second episode reads: "Jenny Joyce has big plans for the fundraising talent show. Can the gang outshine the competition and put Jenny in her place once and for all? Meanwhile, Ma Mary is at the end of her rope, but salvation is just around the corner in the unlikely form of a plumber."
