LGBTQ+ training for gardai to help tackle assaults requested by Dublin City Council

Dublin City Council have requested all gardai undergo LGBTQ+ training to provide specific support to members of the community who have been assaulted.

The Lord Mayor will send correspondence to the Garda Commissioner and the Justice Minster requesting the training and other measures. Councillors also agreed to request more gardai be deployed, increased numbers of visible patrols, further supports for garda LGBT liaison officers and awareness campaign to let the public know about the liaison officers.

There have been a number of homophobic and transphobic attacks in Dublin city centre recently. Five members of the LGBTQ+ were attacked after Dublin Pride festival on Saturday June 15 in St Stephen's Green.

One trans teenager was hospitalised with a fractured skull following the "sickening attack". Councillors unanimously agreed to the Fine Gael emergency motion for the extra supports and garda members at Monday night's Council meeting.

Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy told councillors she would acknowledge the steps taken to curb anti-social behaviour by the Justice Minister and the Garda Commissioner while requesting additional resources.

She said: [DCC] "expresses deep concern regarding safety of members of the public in Dublin city, especially attacks on members of the LGBTQ+ community and other minorities.

"Therefore, this Council requests the Minister of Justice and the Commissioner of An Garda Siochana to include, but not limited to, further increase visible garda patrols in Dublin city, further support local policing initiatives and increase the overall number of An Garda Siochana to prevent anti social behaviour, public order offences and assaults from happening.

She added: "All members of An Garda Siochana to receive comprehensive training regarding the LGBT+ transgender diversity issues and specifically receive training in dealing with and providing special support to victims of the LGBTQ+ attacks.

"That each LGBT liaison officer, diversity officer with An Garda Siochana be further supported to provide specialist assistance to members of the LGBTQ+ community and that an awareness campaign be established that members of the public are aware that such roles."
