LFC fans helped legend make one last journey along Anfield Road

Friends of a devoted Liverpool fan made sure he got one final journey along Anfield Road before he died.

Yesterday saw tributes flood in to lifelong Reds fan Jimmy Flowers, after it was revealed he had died from pancreatic cancer. Jimmy was integral in helping to get the original memorial to Bill Shankly unveiled in the legendary manager's home village of Glenbuck in Scotland.

Spirit of Shankly's Stephen Morgan paying tribute to Jimmy in 2019 when the original memorial was given a new lease of life. He said on the ECHO's Allez Les Rouges podcast: "The initial memorial to Bill Shankly up at Glenbuck was the work of Jimmy Flowers, who used to run the Liverpool Away Supporters Club, and is unfortunately unable to make this trip - we wish him well.

"We all went up there in 1997 when it was unveiled and it looked fantastic but it's a long time ago now. Thankfully the Scottish Mines Restoration Trust and the council along with the Glenbuck campaigners have got together and the plans they've got are fantastic."

Liverpool supporters' group Spirit of Shankly has now paid tribute to Jimmy. It posted: "So sad to hear LFC legend Jimmy Flowers has lost his long battle with @PancreaticCanUK - he was one of Shankly’s best - he fought so hard and his last game was against Chelsea on Jan 21 when his mates took him up the Anfield Rd for the last time RIP Jimmy."

A poem shared by Carragher said: "The legend that is Jimmy Flowers. In his company, you could spend hours listening to his stories about his time following the red men in his prime early days in Europe, shopping trips abroad, European Cup finals amongst the Scouse hoards.

"Jimmy's seen everything in his Liverpool career. Fighting this last battle, Jimmy has no fear. So as we pray for Jimmy in his final days. A true proud, die hard red man set in his ways. Loved by many people and never on his own. The legend Jimmy Flowers, You'll Never Walk Alone!"
