LFC fan dies, teacher's pay-out after punch and 'fireball' spotted in sky

These are the latest ECHO headlines this afternoon Thursday, April 14.

A Liverpool FC fan has died suddenly after falling ill minutes before Liverpool's Champions League match against Benfica at Anfield.

Emergency services rushed to the man's aid on Wednesday as stewards and fellow supporters desperately tried to help him. But despite the best efforts of paramedics the man sadly died.

A Liverpool FC Spokesperson, said: "It is with great regret that Liverpool Football Club can confirm a supporter who was taken ill ahead of last night’s fixture against Benfica has sadly passed away.

Teacher given almost £1m after being punched in the face by pupil

A teacher, who was assaulted by a pupil, has been awarded almost £1m in compensation, a union has revealed.

The teachers' union, Nasuwt, released figures of compensation awarded to members ahead of its annual conference in Birmingham this weekend. One case involved a teacher who was unlikely able to return to her profession after being seriously assaulted by a pupil during a science lesson at a school in London.

The teacher was punched in the face and kicked by the pupil, suffering trauma for which she was awarded £850,000 through the union. The student had a history of violent and disruptive behaviour.

'Bright orange fireball' caught on taxi dashcam streaking through sky

A "bright orange fireball" was caught streaking through the sky on a taxi dashcam.

Stephen, who did not want to give his surname, from Kirkby, said he out working taxis and was driving on on Holly Lane in Aughton on his way to pick up a customer when he noticed something in the sky. He said it was exactly 12.45am today when he spotted the "bright orange fireball with tail."

Speaking to the ECHO Stephen said: "It lasted approximately 10 seconds from northwest of the horizon downwards to the southeast of the horizon." Stephen said it was "definitely a meteor, absolutely no doubt about it" and the taxi driver added it was "amazing and shocking" to see.
