The city of Lexington is honoring military veterans with its annual Week of Valor event. Several activities are scheduled this week.
Lexington’s Week of Valor includes a Gala for Women Veterans, a boxing exhibition, a Veterans Day memorial service, and the Veterans Festival. Brian Engle is the Commission on Veterans Affairs Chairman. He said the festival this Saturday will kick off at 11:00 with skydivers.
“They don’t just coast in on round parachutes and land where the wind takes them. They drive their canopies around and they land on a dime and that’s exactly what they’ll do,” said Engle.
Engle said he served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1988. The Harlan native said he flew the B-52-D.
“The D model was the last aircraft in the operational inventory to have an occupied tail compartment, so I am among the last of the tail gunners, which makes me an antique. So, I’m sure the Smithsonian is waiting for me to pass, so they can put me up as a display…I can hardly wait,” said Engle.
The festival at Masterson Station Park is open to the public and will also feature military displays, inflatables, resources for veterans, food trucks, and music. Engle said there will also be a cruise-in of older cars during the festival. The Veteran recognition dinner is Saturday night at the Lyric Theater.
