Lexington’s fire department recognized with international accreditation

Lexington’s fire department has earned a distinct honor. It is one of only seven departments to earn both international accredited agency status while holding a class one ranking from the insurance services organization.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton recognized the fire department at a press conference Wednesday.

“Our fire department is one of the best of the best in the United States. Our department is professional and experienced, and guess what, they love their jobs. The people of Fayette County benefit from their expertise.”

During the press conference, Lexington Fire Chief Jason Wells said there is always room to improve, but his department shines in some areas.

“During their visit, our peer assessment team identified three best practices that should be emulated elsewhere, these best practices include innovative partnerships with BCTC and the University of Kentucky, and of our community paramedicine program.”

Lexington’s community paramedicine program dispatches paramedics but not ambulances to patients who frequently call 911 but don’t need emergency care. Mayor Linda Gorton also pointed out how oftentimes, neighboring counties will request aid from the Lexington Fire Department.
