The Lexington Division of Waste management is having a Household Hazardous Waste collection event Saturday.
Fayette County residents can bring items like paint, gasoline, cleaners, pesticides and more to the collection site at 1631 Old Frankfort Pike from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
When not disposed of properly, these hazardous chemicals and materials can hurt the environment and even human health.
Lauren Monahan is an Environmental Outreach Specialist with Lexington’s Division of Waste Management. She said to check product labels for disposal instructions.
“Sometimes you can dilute something and safely dispose of it down the drain in some cases. Other cases we do ask you to hold it for one of our special collection events,” said Monahan.
Monahan explained that a good rule of thumb is that anything with a strong odor likely has special instructions.
She said after they’re collected, items are shipped off to a registered facility.
“They will recycle and reuse things like old gasoline where that’s possible. Otherwise, they will dispose of them in environmentally friendly ways following the federal guidelines,” said Monahan.
Monahan added that they are partnered with Habitat for Humanity, which will collect and redistribute old paint.
Participants should load materials into the backseat, trunk or truck-bed in boxes they do not need back.
There is no limit to the number of materials people can bring, however businesses cannot participate.
