As temperatures begin to dip, everyone can use a reminder when it comes to fire safety and prevention. That is the focus of a festival this weekend in central Kentucky. The Lexington Fire Department is hosting its annual Fire Prevention and Wellness Festival on Sunday.
Firefighter Todd Houston said much of the guidance, like stop-drop-and-roll, remains the same year after year but people become complacent.
“Percentage wise, very few people ever have to deal with a structure fire or a car wreck or anything like that. So I think people don’t think it’ll ever happen to them. But we want people to think because when you need to learn about something, we don’t want it to be when it’s actually happening,” said Houston.
Houston said the majority of the calls his department answers were preventable. The festival will have safety demonstrations and information.
The fire official said some of the safety tips are things people just don’t often think of.
“Humans are creatures of habit. So if you go through your front door all the time or through your garage door all the time, typically if something happens, your mind is going to tell you to go to that door. Well, if that door is blocked, that’s not the time you want to try to find a second way out,” said Houston.
Houston said the safety presentations are good reminders for children and adults, alike.
There will also be bounce houses, face painting, a petting zoo, fire truck rides and food.
The festival is on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Masterson Station Park in Lexington.
