Lexia English Drives Literacy for Emergent Bilingual Learners

Lexia English.

As the number of English language learners (also called Emergent Bilingual students) continues to increase nationwide, educators and district administrators need smarter ways to ensure better academic outcomes for every learner.

Lexia English Language Development, a language solution for grades K-6, is designed to help Emergent Bilingual students acquire higher English language proficiency levels. The program provides students with opportunities for extensive speaking and listening practice that spans the curriculum and includes embedded grammar and academic vocabulary learning.

“I believe all [Emergent Bilingual] students need to use this program starting in kindergarten because I know that correct oral language, listening skills, and vocabulary are such major indicators of future success,” said Mary Doerr, ESL Specialist at Lincoln Elementary School in Wenatchee, Washington.

Designed To Build Competence and Confidence

Unlike other English language development products, Lexia English is an asset-based speaking and listening program that creates an inclusive classroom where Emergent Bilingual students find a safe, nonjudgmental environment to practice and build confidence as they learn English. It is aligned with multiple language and reading instruction standards, and the embedded speech recognition engine offers immediate, guided, corrective feedback.

Through academic conversations with 17 culturally and ethnically diverse characters, learners remain engaged every step of the way and see their achievements and successes celebrated. The relatable characters allow students to see themselves in their learning, which helps them feel represented and respected and supports their socio-emotional well-being. The program integrates speaking, listening, and grammar in math, science, social studies, general knowledge, and biographies, providing students with the academic English skills they need to be successful.

Tracking Progress On Multiple Levels

Lexia English’s software offers educators real-time progress monitoring of student performance in specific areas of language proficiency, providing actionable data to support student achievement in a personalized way.

Lexia English features educator reports designed to help teachers and administrators answer important questions about their students’ proficiency levels, program usage, and instructional needs.

  • The District Overview Report provides leaders with a current snapshot of student and staff usage of the program, along with the opportunity to access more details.
  • Class Overview reports show the proficiency level of the content students are working in, as well as giving insight into students' current weekly online usage of the program.
  • The Student Overview documents an individual student’s accuracy in speaking, listening, and grammar content as they work through the program.
  • Teachers can use the Class Practice Groups reports to plan and prioritize small-group instruction, identify students needing an offline lesson, and facilitate conversation among students working at similar proficiency levels.

With Lexia English, educators are equipped with the tools necessary to address individual student needs, reduce the impact of time constraints, enhance their preparedness, and access actionable data to better support student achievement. Teacher-led resources and lessons complement the online component of independent, student-driven learning, helping to streamline instruction and ensure teacher effectiveness.
