Lewis Hamilton retirement rumours as he returns to Canadian Grand Prix's first win scene

Retirement rumours are continuing to swirl as Lewis Hamilton returns to the scene of his first-ever Formula 1 win at the Canadian Grand Prix.

This season has not gone entirely to plan, with his Mercedes car struggling hugely with bouncing down the straight, causing the seven-time champion a bad back and severe pain.

Meanwhile, both the Red Bull and Ferrari teams are streaking clear at the front of the pack.

In the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton swept to a commanding victory in just his sixth ever race at the age of 22. Since then the talented Brit has gone on to win seven world drivers' championships, along with a record 103 wins, 183 podiums and 103 pole positions.

It is a reminder of what a Hamilton on form with the car under him really looks like, so some fans are wondering if the Brit will decide to pack things in at the end of the season.

Will Lewis Hamilton retire in 2022?

Lewis Hamilton has said he currently has no plan to retire, despite his Mercedes team's poor form.

There was a huge amount of speculation after the controversial end to last season, in which then-race director Michael Masi made a decision that may well have cost Hamilton a record eighth title, as Dutch driver Max Verstappen swept past him on the last lap thanks to a safety car and fresh tires.

After a long delay, Hamilton eventually signed a new two-year contract, taking him to the end of 2024.

He told Sky Sports earlier this year: "There is nowhere else I want to be. Just because we have hit a rough patch, it is not in my DNA to back out.

"We can fix this. It is going to be a painful year that we are going to have to ride out together."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said of Lewis' difficulties: "He’s really bad and we just have got to find a solution at this stage.

"He’s maybe the worst affected of all drivers, but pretty much everyone, as far as I understand from the drivers, said something needs to happen. I couldn’t give you an explanation as to what that is."

How old is Lewis Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton is now 37 years-old, but currently has no plans to retire.

Born in 1985, he is approaching his 300th race in F1 after first appearing in the sport in 2007.

The British driver burst onto the scene in a famous fashion, as he was given a top title-challenging seat with McLaren in just his first season.

On the very first lap of his first race in F1, he darted past teammate and then world champion Fernando Alonso. Hamilton then went on to lose the title in dramatic fashion in his first season to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

It would have made him the youngest ever world champion at the time, but he managed to seal it the following year.

Hamilton has gone on to score at least one race win in every season so far, and will be hoping to succeed in a repeat of this difficult challenge this year.
