Pop star Lewis Capaldi was horrified to be mistaken for a clothes shop assistant. Worse still, the trendy London store he was browsing in had copies of his 10million-selling debut album on its shelves.
The Someone You Loved singer, 25, revealed he channelled the low point into penning his hit comeback track Forget Me. Lewis, who had gone three years without putting out a record, revealed he had expected to be mobbed by fans when he nipped in to the shop.
He said: “I was in Westfield in Urban Outfitters, which is one place that I’m like, ‘Right… they’ve got the records on the shelves.' I usually don’t go in because it’s too crazy.
“So I go in there and I’m browsing and I’m walking around and someone comes up and asks me, ‘Excuse me, do you work here?’ I’m like, ‘This is not my job.’ I came out of the shop and I immediately texted my manager saying, ‘We need to release some music, this is bad.’”
The Scot recently admitted feeling pressure ahead of his return to music – warning he would “retire from public life” altogether if the new tunes did not perform well when they were released. Luckily, Forget Me went on to top the singles charts last month. His second album is set to follow later this year.
