Geoffrey Bindman always stood by the underdog and the dispossessed, making his firm the go-to for civil liberties and just causes. He was always wonderfully friendly with people who were going through their own personal hell.
We became friends when he was representing the victims of torture by the Pinochet regime in Chile. During the extradition proceedings, I asked him what he thought would happen.
Geoffrey said: “He might get off, he might go to prison, but there is an alternative … We lose on all counts, but he gets stuck in his house talking to lawyers all day for the rest of his life. You wouldn’t believe how long and arduous a punishment that would be.”
He dedicated his life to protecting the freedoms of ordinary people, standing up for the truth no matter the consequences. For Geoffrey, truth was the essence of justice.
