I had the pleasure on a number of occasions of directing Gudrun Ure on BBC radio, most memorably as a beautifully nuanced and sharp-tongued Miss Jean Brodie, whom she admired as “a woman of independent mind”. This was felicitous casting in that, as she told us during rehearsals, her parents had chosen to name her after the liberated Gudrun in DH Lawrence’s Women in Love.
