During her time in Tanzania, Frene Ginwala was tasked with producing a state newspaper, the Daily News. She wanted it to be taken seriously and make an impact, both inside the country and beyond, reporting and commenting freely – or at least be much more independent than newspapers in similar situations elsewhere in Africa at that time.
Her colleague the British-born journalist David Martin came to have a lot of respect for her, and she was affectionately known as “Frene the Genie”.
