The architect MJ Long, who renovated Frank Auerbach’s paint-encrusted London studio in 1990, was later surprised to find its walls swathed in blue plastic and the robust new floor she had installed covered with cheap lino. Auerbach said that he had done so to protect the surfaces, which he judged too beautiful “to muck up”.
