In the mid-1990s, the Big Brum Theatre in Education Company asked Edward Bond to write a play for young people. We went on to commission 10 plays from him, performing them in schools, universities, community venues and theatres across Britain and abroad. Edward also spoke at events, conducted masterclasses and workshops, and supported us in myriad ways.
As the person at Big Brum making grant applications and funding bids, I knew our work with Edward was a vital key to securing the company’s portfolio status with the Arts Council. Though our relationship with him was always professional, it was also close and affectionate: he would sometimes refer to himself as “Little Brum”.
