In the Guardian’s Poem of the Week feature, Carol Rumens presented all sorts of work from the classical to the contemporary and provided an introductory critical commentary. This went on to stimulate online debate and discussion by “below the line” commenters, in which Carol herself took part.

Of its African Writers Series, founded by Alan Hill in 1962, she said that she did not immediately appreciate its pioneering character, though came to value how far ahead of its time it was in finding and displaying the big new talents.
