In 1993 the actor Bernard Hill created an extraordinary character in a three-part drama by Edward Bond for BBC television, Olly’s Prison, directed by Roy Battersby.
The work’s long opening scene pits Hill’s character Mike against a silent daughter, brilliantly played by Charlotte Coleman, whom he eventually kills over her refusal to drink a cup of tea. The drama as a whole addresses profound issues of justice, family and morality, held together by Hill’s troubled and enigmatic Everyman.
