Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has joined his team-mates in expressing his delight at James Milner signing a new deal at the club.
It was confirmed on Monday that veteran midfielder Milner had signed a one-year contract to stay at Anfield. The ECHO understands the former England international has taken a significant pay cut to remain with the Reds, having also turned down offers from the Premier League and abroad in the process.
The three-time Premier League winner took the decision to wait until the end of the season before putting pen to paper, giving him enough time to weigh up his options.
And Liverpool skipper Henderson couldn’t hide his delight upon receiving the news. “Boom! Let’s go!” he wrote on an Instagram post from Milner announcing his extension. Andy Robertson meanwhile reacted by saying: “JIMMMMMMMMMY”. Harvey Elliott added: “Love it”.
Arriving on Merseyside in the summer of 2015 from Manchester City on a free transfer, Milner has developed into a vital member of the squad and epitomises the club culture of the collective carrying greater importance than any one individual.
The 36-year-old has made 289 appearances for the Reds and scored 16 goals. He is fourth on the list time of all-time record Premier League appearance makers with 588 and has the eighth most assists in the league’s history with 86.
Milner is currently the second longest-serving player in the Reds squad, behind captain Henderson, and will be the only remaining name from Klopp's first Liverpool starting XI still at the club once Divock Origi departs at the end of this month.
