I tried treats from a new Nottingham cake shop and they were heavenly

A new cake shop has opened on Carrington Street, selling mouthwatering cheesecakes, cupcakes and tarts. Rotari Cakes has range of sweet treats at a range of prices including a £1.40 macaroons and £5.50 cheesecakes. But are they as sweet as they look? Nottinghamshire Live Life Writer Caroline Barry puts them to the test.

You don't have to ask me to sample cakes twice in the name of good journalism so I was more than happy to tackle a slice of the heavenly red velvet cake and macarons. In fact, the cake barely touched the plate before I inhaled it which must have been a stunning sight for my poor colleagues.

The red velvet cake had a delightful moist sponge texture and was melt-in-your-mouth good. I briefly contemplated licking the plate clean although decided that might be a step too far in public.

It was topped by creamy dollops which were also piped throughout the layers of sponge. There were also crumbly bits of raspberry on top which added a fruity flavour to the moist cake.

It also felt a bit decadent to be opening the professional white bakery box instead of my usual slice of something from Tesco. There was also a plastic tube of macarons accompanying the box that housed four or five green and pink treats.

The cakes on offer at the bakery vary in price depending on the size and visitors can choose how much they want to take away. I can happily confirm that an individual slice was more than enough for me to get a sweet fix and put a smile on my face for the day.

I also spent a good half an hour on their website trying to justify the purchase of a berry and almond cake for my tea. I lost the battle over trying to argue the fruit on the top of it justified the purchase as one of my five a day so ended up cake-less for dinner.

The hard work wasn't over as I still had to sample the macarons though so I bravely decided to get stuck in. Macarons are classed as a dessert on their website although they make a really lovely light snack with a coffee.

The crisp shell melted in my mouth when I took a bite and the filling added a chocolate-y flavour to the treat. Other fillings can include white chocolate, dark chocolate, pistachio, fruits , peanut butter, salted caramel.

In the interest of confirming my research, I decided to try a green one with a salted caramel insert which was perfection. The lighter texture meant that it didn't feel like I was being too naughty even though, I absolutely was.

Nottingham isn't short of a cake shop or two but Rotari Cakes have managed to create a fresh take on sweet treats. It's going to be dangerous knowing how close they are to my home and also, that they offer delivery.
