‘Let me do my job’: A police shooting in Madison is now being investigated as a homicide even as city watchdog claims obstruction

A police shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, that resulted in the death of a man on Wednesday afternoon is now being investigated as a homicide, according to local officials. The city is currently facing intense scrutiny and rising tensions following the incident. It occurred while officers were attempting to arrest a man for allegedly trying to break into parked vehicles.

Per The Washington Post, Police Chief John Patterson confirmed the status of the case during a news conference on Thursday. “This is an open and active homicide investigation,” Patterson stated. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway identified the man killed in the incident as Corey Ruiz. The police department has not officially released the names of the officers involved. However, a spokesperson noted that the officer who fired the shots has been on the force for 11 years.
