Leona Maguire off to red-hot start at KPMG Women's PGA Championship

Leona Maguire moved into contention at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship with a scintillating 69 in round one.

In her first start since winning her second LPGA event at the Meijer LPGA Classic, Maguire hit every fairway and missed just two greens.

With four Birdies and two Bogeys on Thursday, Maguire cruised to a round of two-under par and moved into the top five on the leaderboard.

Speaking after her first round, the newly minted World number 12 described the round as 'stress-free,' with her eyes firmly fixed on winning a first major title.

“I hit every fairway and nearly every green, which in a Major championship is as stress-free as you can make it.”

“I think it’s just managing energy levels,” she said. “I played early yesterday and had a nap and back at it today.

"So probably another nap this afternoon, and we’ll be ready to go for tomorrow. It’s a tough golf course. You have to be physically and mentally sharp.

"So it’s a case of being really disciplined out there. And for the most part, I did a good job of that today.”
