Leona Maguire in pole position in Florida for first LPGA Tour victory

Leona Power vows to stick to the plan in tomorrow's Drive On Championship final round after putting herself in pole position for her first LPGA Tour triumph.

The 27-year-old Cavan golfer leads the way alongside American rival Marina Alex after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament in Fort Myers after shooting a bogey-free 65 at the Florida venue.

Maguire finished as runner-up in two LPGA tournaments in 2021, in her first full season on the tour.

And she hopes to put those experiences to good use tomorrow, although Alex reeled in Maguire's two-shot lead with a brace of closing birdies.

The pair hold a four-shot lead over the chasing pack.

"I was in contention a few times last year and learned a lot from that," acknowledged Maguire afterwards.

"It's just sticking to the game plan, keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully I'll hold the putts.

"I didn't look at the leaderboard today and it will be the same tomorrow."

This is Maguire's second tournament of the new season and her ambition heading into 2022 was to make more gains after making a sensational Solheim Cup debut last year.

"It was really solid," she said, analysing her round. "I took advantage of birdie opportunities. It was really nice.

"Day by day I'm getting better, I feel like I've been able to capitalise so far."
