Leo Varadkar makes strange RTE Late Late Show comment as he remembers first Covid lockdown

Leo Varadkar has said that he will "never forget" the first Covid-19 lockdown - as he made a strange comment at the Late Late Show.

Mr Varadkar, who was Taoiseach at the time of the initial shutdown of the country, was looking back on that moment at a Government event on Tuesday.

He said that he remembered the music of the lockdown, as well as the TV hit Normal People.

But his comments about the RTE entertainment show have caught a few people by surprise.

Speaking to the gathered media, the Tanaiste said: "'I will never forget watching Normal People during that first lockdown. And even nights in every Friday watching the Late Late Show which is something I never did before and don't have to do again."

Many were quick to pick up the comments, with some suggesting it was an unintentional dig at Ryan Tubridy.

One person commented: "The shade at Ryan Tubridy" with a second adding: "A stunning intervention by the Tanaiste".

Some even compared it to a 'drive-by' on the Late Late Show

The Fine Gael leader was speaking at the launch of the Government's new Income for the Arts scheme.

He was joined by the Taoiseach Micheal Martin and the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD at the event in Temple Bar.

The new scheme will examine, over a three year period, the impact of a basic income on artists and creative arts workers. Payments of €325 per week will be made to 2,000 eligible artists and creative arts workers who will be selected at random and invited to take part.

The scheme will open for applications on April 12.
